Breakthroughs programs accelerate the learning process.  They encourage the development of young people.

Breakthroughs gets at what's bothering today's youth - their concerns, no matter how small, listens to them, and in the process gives them back a new sense of self.

Breakthroughs gives children back their childhood, and youth discover they have a future.

Breakthroughs Programs are Comprehensive.
All Breakthroughs Youth Development programs consist of two primary components. 1) An intensive youth development course.  2) One year of mentoring, either in a small group or one-on-one, by caring adults from the community.  These adults are screened and trained by Breakthroughs.

          PROGRAMS:

                              Children's Program
Elementary School (5th and 6th graders)

                              Adolescent Programs
Middle School Youth (7th and 8th graders)
High School Youth (9th through 12th graders)
Youth in the Juvenile Justice System (15 to 21 years old)

                             Young Adult Progam
Young people in College aged 18 to 22.

Breakthroughs Programs have Three Phases:

         A)  Recruitment and Enrollment
         B)  The Youth intensive Development Course
         C)  Aftercare, which includes follow-through sessions and mentoring.

EACH PROGRAM IS A RITE OF PASSAGE

Each program is designed to take the young people to the next level of development appropriate for each individual and the group.  The children change, they go through a metamorphosis, and begin to blossom more fully into who they were intended to become.

TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS

Parents Workshop
For parents of adolescents, who want to understand today's children, and to improve or expand their parenting skills.  Parents learn more about who their children are, develop and increase their communication skills, and discover what else they can do as parents to empower their children.

Professional Workshop
For teachers, aids, administrators, counselors, social workers, therapists, police officers, probation officers, juvenile attorneys, judges, college students, graduate students, and adult volunteers who want to become professional - producing powerful, positive and predictable results with children.

Facilitation Skills Training
Today's children require that all teachers develop facilitation skills for effective teaching in the classroom.  Teaching is no longer about sitting down and learning what the teacher has to offer.  Teaching must be interactive and requires the ability to deal with group dynamics.

Training of Adult Volunteers to Contribute to Youth
All of Breakthroughs programs are created and produced by volunteers who are trained and supervised. You could make a difference in the lives of Hawaii's vulnerable children who are at risk of not finding there way.  (Click here for possible volunteer roles)

CURRENT PROGRAMS

Schedule for Active Castle Program (Click Here)

Castle High School August 2007 -July 2008

Breakthroughs will work in participation with Castle High School to support 150 freshmen in the Aloha Academy for this school year 2007-2008, and beyond.  The program is sponsored by the Department of Defense, and is a Healthy Life Styles Program.

Breakthroughs will work in partnership with the Castle Academy's core teachers to improve academic and social success of the students, while deterring teen pregnancy alcohol and drug experimentation, use and abuse, and other "at-risk" behaviors.  We are reaching out to ninth greaders because students' beliefs and habits solidify in that first year of High School, and they either achieve or become stuck in performing below heir real capabilities not only in that freshman year, but in the subsequent school years as well.

Caring adults from the community will volunteer their time and energies, and assist us in ensuring the success of these students - call and become one of them.  Breakthroughs will train and supervise throughout.  Adults can volunteer as mentors to the young people and serve as positive role models for one year at a minimum, and are welcome to sign up at the end of the year for a second year. There are many other roles volunteers could fill.  You can volunteer to be coaches for each of the two courses supporting youth as they go through the activities that are designed to empower them to achieve academically and socially.  You can be on the Logistics team and take care of the physical space during the courses.  You could help with food preparation and service or help with youth transportation.

From August 6th to 10th, 2007, 150 freshmen will participate in relationship and team-building activities, experiential processes, large-group guided conversations, classroom small group sessions.

From September 30th to October 6th, 2007, 40 of those students will be given the opportunity to participate in a more in depth Intensive Course where for 7 days they will explore their own youth development, and begin to work on empowering themselves to fulfill their dreams and achieve their goals.  Other activities will include dyad and triad work, creative visualization, meditation, vision work, goal setting, and more.  The foundation of the program is listening, the skill that most directly affects motivation and learning, and is taught experientially, through the experience of being listed to, and the program builds on the 5 R's of the Castle Complex: Respect, Relationship, Resourcefulness, Resiliency, and Responsibility.

Supported by adult mentors, the youth will continue the work of developing their skills in twice monthly sessions, every other Saturday, beginning Octobor 20th for the duration of the school year.

Volunteer orientations will be held at Castle High School in Room 37 at 6:30 pm on the following dates:
Tuesdays:  July 24, July 31, August 7, August 14, August 28, September 4, September 11, September 18 and September 25

PSA Project

Project Presentations was November 18, 2006 - 5 PM - Windward Community College Campus, in the Akoakoa Building, Room 101

Breakthroughs 2006 Summer and Fall Project:

Mentoring Youth to Express their talents in the Creation and Development of PSA’s intended to increase awareness and to deter young people from using or abusing alcohol or other drugs, to be shown to targeted audiences, and also aired on Olelo.

On June 28th, and July 5th, we oriented students from Castle High School, and selected  participatants in the project that was designed to give the young people an opportunity to:

1) impact their friends, peers, their educators, the public, and possibly their own family members as well, regarding the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

2)  be trained in and develop marketable skills in the creation and development of PSA’s.

3) express their creative abilities with a group of adults and youth who are of like mind.

4) develop their ability to work as a team to create and produce the end product PSA’s, and to support each other in the endeavor.

Olelo trained the adults involved in the project on the use of its equipment on June 19th and 21st.

Punk Productions provided the PSA Technical Expertise to the entire group of adults and youth.

Project completed Jan 2007.

Kailua Middle School

Forty children, 7th and 8th graders from Kailua Intermediate School have been selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship to participate in the Breakthroughs Youth Development Program designed especially for them.  The objectives of the program are to strengthen the resiliency of the children and enhance the likeliness of their success through school and in life.  All children are vulnerable to the many negative influences in their environment, and not all are able to withstand the constant bombardment of hose negative influences.

This program is directed at increasing their awareness of themselves and their needs; strengthening their ability to take care of themselves and their needs; increasing their appreciation for healthy sources available for getting their needs met; and supporting them in putting into practice important principles to make decisions and live  their lives by.  The children will learn what a  healthy individual is, a healthy relationship, a healthy family, and healthy forms of self expression.
