Possible Volunteer Roles for Breakthroughs (What you can do to be a part of our adventure)
Mentor/Committed Partners: Work directly with the youth for a period of 9 months to a year. Encourage the youth to accomplish positive goals and to make the right decisons. High School Mentors/Committed partners have contact with their youth 3 time a week (once in person, twice by other means). They encourage and help the youths to attend the follow-through sessions and are there as a listening ear. Middle school Mentors/Committed partners work with the weekly after school groups and help the youths attend the monthly follow-through sessions. (Click here for more information.)
Logistical Support: Serve as the behind the scenes support for the different aspects of the cycle. You may be helping to set up the room during an intensive course. Getting equipment and materials ready for different activities. You may be supporting a workshop, a training, a course, or a follow-through.
Coach: Coaches encourage the youths to take advantage of the opportunity to do what they are there to do. Coaches go through the course with the youth, share some of your own stories, keep track of the youth are and how they need to participate. Coaches may also help at the follow-throughs helping with activity management, helping youth do what they should be doing and lending a listening ear.
Transportation: Transport youth to the course or Follow-throughs. Pick up youths in the morning at a central location. May be picking up one or two at their homes. Transporting youths home after the course day or Followthrough.
Security: Help provide security around the course and events. Help the youths to remain in the area. Help prevent unauthorized people from entering area.
Low Ropes: Set up and train to run low ropes activities. Manage and monitor activities for safety and accomplishment. Maintain close contact with Course Leaders to maintain schedule.
High Ropes: Set up and train to support of the High ropes activities. Monitor events for safety and accomplishment. Maintain close contact with Course Leaders to maintain schedule.
Health and Wellness: Need to have minimum first aide qualifications. Provide first aide at the course. Monitor for injuries and safety.
Mental Health support: Practicing therapists. Work with youths to process individual issues and support them in full participation in the course activities.
Administrative Support: Prepare requied paperwork for completion by volunteers, parents and youths. Essemble notebooks for various roles during a cycle. General office activities. Answer phones and inquires concerning BFYAR. Fulfill computer needs, i.e. databases, letters, etc. Contact youths, parents, volunteers and staff. Inventory supplies for various activities.
Grant Writers: Develop grants to take advatage of various sources of financing. Attend concept meeting for various grants being offered. Research sources of future funding.
Public Relations and Publicity: Present Informational briefing for community groups, schools, and potential volunteers. Develop means of spreading Breakthroughs story.
Enrollment: Help recruit youth and parents for a cycle. Present informational briefings for both youth and parents. Work with youth to fill out the application. Work with parents to full out required paperwork.
